Hugh Wayne High
April 29, 1923 - November 7, 2009
Born 29 April 1923, in Venice, California, to Wayne High and Velma Myrtle Beamon. Died 7 November 2009, in Portland, Oregon. As a young man he graduated from Venice High School, played violin in the Junior Philharmonic Orchestra of California, and graduated from Santa Monica City College with an A.A. Degree. He enlisted in U. S. Navy in December of 1942 and was sent to the University of Notre Dame for the officer candidate program. The war intervened and he was assigned as Pharmacist Mate Third Class, and served aboard the USS Lycoming APA-155 – Attack Transport Ship. This ship was part of the primary invasion force of Okinawa, made numerous transits across the Pacific, and was one of the first ships to arrive at Nagasaki after the bomb. He received an Honorable Discharge in December of 1945 after traveling over 68,000 miles during his Navy service. Hugh graduated from USC with a B.A. Degree in Psychology in 1949, and received a Masters Degree in Education from Cal State Los Angeles. His life’s work was as an Educator. He founded Cañada Valley School 1956, and later retired from the La Cañada School District in 1986. He was a Life member of California Teachers Association and the National Rifle Association. Hugh had a great love for the outdoors and spent many summers with his family and friends hiking, camping, fishing and hunting in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and other destinations. He remained an avid fisherman all his life. Hugh married Lorraine LeeElla Carey, also from Venice, CA, in 1945. His two children, Darryl Wayne of Utah and Susan Linda of Oregon, grandchildren Emily, Nathan, Kimball, Carlie, Cameron, and Michael, and six great-grandchildren survive him, with another on the way.
