James Edward Havelhurst

August 28, 1931 - February 10, 2022

James Havelhurst, 90, passed away peacefully at home, and surrounded by family, on February 10, 2022. He was born to Henry and Dena Havelhurst August 28, 1931 and grew up in Portland, Oregon. He was a graduate of Roosevelt High School. Jim enlisted in the Army in 1951 and was honorably discharged in June 1959. He served as a firefighter and part of the rescue crew for the Portland Fire Department from November 1956 until his retirement in April 1990. Jim married Carolyn Kay Havelhurst in April 1989. They loved each other dearly and shared many interests. Jim’s hobbies were numerous. He loved animals and got involved with 4-H horse clubs in the 1960s. He was a parent, then a leader became the superintendent of 4H Horses at the Clackamas County Fair, and was actively involved with the Oregon State Fair. He began judging 4-H shows and moved to open horse judging. He was well known and respected as a judge nationally and internationally. He also enjoyed hunting, horseback riding packing trips, scuba diving, and dog obedience training. Jim was a caring and compassionate man who loved his wife, family and friends. He believed in living life to the fullest. He is greatly missed. Survivors include wife, Carolyn Kay Havelhurst at home, daughters Terri (Bill) Gilbert of Walla Walla, WA, Tina Havelhurst of Oregon City, OR, Traci Henry of Belle Plaine, IA, Dana Moon (Randy) of Dixie, WA, and Jenny Loveland of Scottsdale, AZ. He leaves 5 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking people to donate to the Jim Havelhurst Memorial Youth Scholarship Fund. Donations can be sent to the Pinto Heritage Foundation, 7300 NW 23rd Street, Bethany, OK 73008, to the attention of Dorothy Fread, with a memo or note that the donation is for the Jim Havelhurst Memorial Youth Scholarship Fund.
