Gerald Barton McAteer (Gerry) age 80 of West Linn, Oregon passed away on December 13, 2024, surrounded by his loving daughters, Barbara and Kathleen. Gerry was born and raised in Washington, DC and attended St Thomas Apostle School and St John's College High School where he ran track and played football in the city championship game of 1961, which attracted what was then the largest sport crowd in DC history of over 49,500 spectators. He graduated from Villanova University with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics. After graduating, he started working with the FDIC until his service with the Army.

Gerry enlisted in the Army in 1968. He later graduated from Army Officers Candidate School (OCS) in Fort Benning GA (now Fort Moore) with a designation of Infantry Unit Commander. After OCS, he was assigned as a Recon Platoon Leader with the 31st Infantry Regiment patrolling one of the combat zones on the Korean DMZ. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. After leaving Korea, he was assigned duty in the Pentagon.

Gerry returned to the FDIC after his Army service and spent his entire career in various roles. He was one of the longest serving FDIC bank examiners assigned to both the Philadelphia and Portland field offices. His specialty was directing consumer protection compliance examinations. Gerry had a great sense of humor; had a generous laugh, quick wit, and always comfortable to share his opinion of current events or to discuss his beloved Washington Redskins. He was the oldest with four siblings and he stayed in contact multiple times during the years, with all of them. He was very patriotic and proud of his country and service with the Army. He treasured his membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). He volunteered to serve in many VFW honor guard ceremonies for veteran funerals.

Gerry is survived by his wife, Kathy, daughters Barbara (Ian) and Kathleen (Nathan). Brothers Dennis, Sean (Loretta), Kevin (Susan), sister Mary Beth (Garry), and many nephews and nieces, fellow veterans, and friends.
