Obituary

James "Barney" Barnard, 82, of Portland, passed away on October 26, 2025, at Mountain Park Memory Care. He was born in Portland, Oregon, on July 28, 1943, to James and Ethel (Anderson) Barnard.

Barney briefly served in the U.S. Army before dedicating many years to working with LeTourneau heavy equipment, where he became skilled at disassembling and reassembling the massive machines.

He was also an active participant in Portland's hot rod scene for many years, with his most significant achievement occurring in 1982 when he won first place at the NHRA World Finals at Orange County International Raceway, driving his top fuel dragster named "Northwind."

For years, Barney could often be found at Jim Dandy's on Sandy Boulevard, a legendary gathering spot for car enthusiasts. He spent countless hours there with a close-knit group of friends he had known since childhood.

More than anything, Barney loved driving—the open road and the freedom it brought him.

He is survived by his three children: Paul, Debbie, and Angela; and three granddaughters: Courtney, Megan, and Sammy. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters Mary, Clara, and Shirley; his youngest son, Casey; and his granddaughter Michelle.

An interment will take place on Friday, March 6, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Willamette National Cemetery.
