Obituary

Michael Lee (Pops) Messner passed away quietly Sunday, May 21, 2023 while resting on the back porch of his Jackson, MI home, at the age of 68.
Michael was the only child to Clifford & Mary (Skidmore) Messner. He was born in Jackson Aug, 18, 1954. He attended local Jackson schools and while he did not receive his high school diploma, he returned to school in later years and received a college degree in diesel mechanics with applied science from Portland Community College in Portland, OR.
In 1974, at the age of 19, Michael enlisted in the Marine Corps. He obtained the rank of Sargent and while enlisted traveled abroad to the Philippines, Vietnam and Japan.
While on military base in Twentynine Palms, CA, Michael met the love of his life, Betty Ellen Newton. Michael & Betty were married Oct 2, 1976 for 33years until Betty's passing Dec 18, 2009.
Michael & Betty had 2 sons, William M (Bill) Messner born Sep 29,1977 & James D (JD) Messner born Jan 26, 1981.
Michael enjoyed working with his hands. He spent many hours on home projects for himself and his family, including renovations on his current home in Jackson, MI. He took great pride in recreating the home's original wood & block form.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents Clifford E Messner & Mary E (Skidmore) Messner, and his wife Betty E. (Newton) Messner.
Michael is survived by his Aunt & Uncle, Mike & Thelma Ratcliff; his son & daughter-in-law William M (Bill) Messner & Shelda M (Moore) McCullar-Messner; his son & daughter-in-law James D (JD) Messner & Katrina L (Kat) (Reckmann) Messner; his grandchildren & step-grandchildren Kayla M. Ingold, Samantha M. Reckmann, William M. Messner, Corbin D McCullar, Cody J. Messner, Austin H. Messner, Connor D. McCullar, Zakary T. Messner, Riley J. McCullar, Mila M. Messner, Isabella A. Messner & Aidan M. McCullar.

Michael will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife, Betty on Friday June 16, 2023. Oregon funeral service will be held on the same day at Hillside Chapel in Oregon City, OR. Viewing will begin at 10am and will be followed by a service with military honors and reception. For those who wish to attend the graveside service, procession to Skyline Memorial Gardens will begin at 2pm with the graveside service at 3pm.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations to the National Veterans Foundation.

Michael was a great man, loved by many. His caring heart and willingness to be there for anyone in need will be greatly missed.
