In Loving Memory of Nolan James "Jim" Thatcher

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nolan James "Jim" Thatcher, beloved husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and friend, who peacefully departed this life on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at the age of 78.

Born in Lebanon, Indiana to Alice Marie and Nolan Keith Thatcher, Jim was the eldest of two children, a loving big brother to his sister Zora. From a young age, Jim carried a warmth and generosity that would leave a lasting mark on everyone he met.

Jim proudly served in the United States Army and in the Vietnam War, embodying courage and commitment. He was also a gifted drummer, a lover of the outdoors, and an adventurous spirit who found joy in the simple beauty of nature. Above all, Jim was a man of deep faith, with an enduring love for Yahweh that guided his life and the way he treated others—with compassion, warmth, and generosity.

Jim was a devoted and loving husband to Janet Marie Thatcher, and a proud father to Sheila, Ryan, Janet, Savannah, Courtney, and many others who were blessed to call him "Dad." Jim opened his heart and home to countless foster children, offering them love, stability, and a sense of belonging that changed lives forever.

To his grandchildren and the many lives he touched, Jim will be remembered for his unwavering kindness, his playful sense of humor, his open-hearted generosity, and the way he made everyone feel like family. His legacy is one of love in action—a life of quiet service, deep faith, and playfulness.

A funeral service honoring Jim's life will be held on August 19, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 SE Mt. Scott Blvd, Portland, OR, where he will receive full military honors in recognition of his service to his country.


The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the compassionate caregivers at Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center, Rose Linn Care Center, and Signature Hospice for their tender care and support during Jim's final days.

Though he has left this earthly life, Jim's memory lives on in every laugh he inspired, every heart he comforted, and every life he changed. He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
